Jennifer Feeney - Real life story
In 2005, I left Belfast to study law at Aberystwyth University and after a fun filled gap year, I completed my LPC at Cardiff Law School.
I qualified as a Solicitor, shortly before joining Blake Morgan in June 2015. In my previous firm, I represented nurses, dentists and opticians who were facing fitness to practise proceedings brought by their regulators, who were often represented by Blake Morgan. I was impressed by the quality of the work as well as the fair and professional approach of the team and decided that I wanted to join the Professional Regulatory Team in Cardiff. The award winning reputation of the team in particular made my decision to move an easy one.
Initially, my role consisted of undertaking fitness to practise investigations for one regulatory client. Coming from a defence background, I was able to bring this experience to the team which was appreciated and valued. The investigations are varied, which makes the work interesting, and can involve interviewing anyone from Chief Executive at Trusts, to medical experts and bereaved relatives.
Joining the firm
A short time after joining the firm, I was offered the opportunity to become involved in clinical negligence work which involves representing GP's, dentists and Consultants who are members of a medical defence union. I already had experience in this area and was keen to develop it. I am responsible for providing advice to the client on liability, quantum and ensuring that the best possible outcome is achieved. I regularly attend case management hearings and particularly enjoy negotiations.
Most recently, I was offered the opportunity to represent another regulatory client. I now regularly undertake the role of Case Presenter at interim and final hearings. I am responsible for presenting the case on behalf of the regulator, advising on the evidence and drafting charges. I particularly enjoy this work as there are many different aspects to it and I enjoy seeing the case through from start to finish.
I have enjoyed my first 18 months at Blake Morgan. My hard work has been rewarded with a number of opportunities to develop my practise. The variety of my role means every day is different, but it is a supportive environment that I continually learn in. Networking in important and I enjoy my role on the Staff Consultative Committee. We have drinks in the office at the end of each month which is a great opportunity to learn what we deliver as a firm and also help with making friends within the office.
