CIOs to be included in the Index of Business Names

Posted on
From 1 January 2018 all charitable incorporated organisations (CIO) will be included in the Business Names Index which is maintained by Companies House. This means that all CIOs will appear in search results generated through Companies House searches.

As a result of this change, any applications for new CIOs will need to check whether their proposed name includes any 'sensitive words or expressions' which require prior approval of Companies House and/or another body. If consent is required, a letter of non-objection from Companies House will need to be attached to the application for registration with the Charity Commission.

The list of words considered 'sensitive words' can be viewed here on the Companies House website.
