Elections to the new Head teacher Boards

Over 160 Head teachers of academies have applied to be appointed to the new Head teacher Boards being set up to support the work of the eight Regional Schools Commissioners who are due to take up their posts this September. Voting opened on 23 June 2014 and runs through until 11 July 2014.

The Regional Schools Commissioners will be taking over responsibility for:

  • Monitoring performance and intervening to secure improvement in underperforming academies in their areas.
  • Taking decisions on the creation of new academies in their area by approving applications from maintained schools wishing to convert to academy status.
  • Supporting the national Schools Commissioner to ensure the sponsor market meets local need including authorising applications to become an academy sponsor, monitoring performance of existing sponsors and de-authorising them where necessary; recommending suitable sponsors to ministers for maintained schools that have been selected to become academies and encouraging new sponsors.
