London Assembly calls for dedicated regional commissioner

Posted on
Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has come under fire from the London Assembly Education Panel this month, as the new Regional Commissioners take up their posts.  Eight commissioners have been put in place across England to oversee academies and free schools in their area.  They have powers delegated from the Secretary of State for Education to intervene where academies are underperforming, and to approve new academies and new academy sponsors.

However, a report released by the London Assembly Education Panel entitled 'London Learners, London Lives' criticises the geographical division of responsibility between commissioners. It claims it is "nonsense to have separate regional commissioners for neighbouring London boroughs but to have the same commissioner for a school in the Isle of Wight as for Lambeth".
