Morgan Cole’s Growing Ambitions programme has won a top award at the Chartered Institute of Housing Welsh Housing Awards 2013.

Morgan Cole was named as most community focused contractor at the awards which were held on 29 November 2013. The award recognises Morgan Cole’s innovative delivery of community benefits and commitment to corporate social responsibility objectives to Welsh communities.

Mererid McDaid of Morgan Cole says: "These awards celebrate best practice across the housing sector in Wales and we are therefore delighted that our efforts have been recognised. The social housing sector is a key practice area for us and we enjoy strong relationships with many providers throughout Wales and England."

Growing Ambitions gives young people the opportunity to improve their work prospects. Nominated by their local social housing association, young people have the chance to spend a week with Morgan Cole, gaining vital work experience and learning more about the world of business that will enhance their prospects of employment at a later date.

Mentored by trainee solicitors, the programme includes the opportunity to spend "a week in the life of a lawyer" which includes attending Court, visiting a barrister in chambers and meeting a lecturer at Cardiff University. Participants also take part in workshops to learn skills such as negotiation and presentation, and spend time with human resources professionals who give tips on interview techniques and completing application forms.

McDaid continues: "The Growing Ambitions programme has been welcomed by some seven housing associations in Wales and they tell us that their tenants really value the opportunity that we are able to provide. Indeed, we have already launched a second programme for tenants. Wear 2 Work gives tenants assistance with securing a job as well as business clothing."

The Wear 2 Work programme is supported by social housing providers RCT Homes, Coastal Housing Group, Grŵp Gwalia, Melin Homes, Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association, Newport City Homes, Valleys 2 Coast Housing,  Taff Housing Association, Cardiff YMCA Housing Association, Cadwyn Housing Association, Wales & West Housing Association Limited, Family Housing Association (Wales) Limited and Tai Calon. The programme which ran for the first time in November this year assisted tenants  with securing a job and appropriate business clothing with a series of workshops hosted by Morgan Cole and provides advice on CV writing, interview tips and how to make the right first impression. A stylist from John Lewis also recommended suitable clothing to ensure that tenants can attend interviews and start new jobs feeling confident and well presented. Business clothing was donated by staff at Morgan Cole and their business contacts, including Brewin Dolphin, for tenants to keep.
