Max is a consultant in our employment team. He has specialised in advising in employment law matters for over 20 years.
Main areas of practice
Recognised as a leader in his field by Chambers, Max heads a team which advises clients on all aspects of employment and pensions law. He has built a national reputation for his work in this field.
He still practices as an advocate and has represented the firm's clients before employment tribunals and the EAT. He has also advised extensively on the transfer of undertaking of regulations, outsourcing issues and education. He remains actively involved in community affairs in Portsmouth where he has lived for 37 years.
His clients are national and international organisations throughout the UK in the education sector and retail, manufacturing and service industries.
Max has managed and successfully represented clients in some of the Employment group's most complex and demanding cases before the employment tribunals, including a number of high profile cases involving the Transfer of Undertaking Regulations (TUPE).
- During the last 18 months he has supported a multinational technology company throughout two extensive redundancy exercises, involving two extensive collective consultation exercises in different areas of the business, and subsequent internal procedures and employment tribunal claims.
- He conducted a successful defence of claims of unfair dismissal, race discrimination and victimisation against a secondary school before the employment tribunal and secured a substantial order for costs against the unsuccessful claimant.
- Max led the Employment team in respect of due diligence for an international manufacturer's acquisition of two manufacturing sites and then, subsequently, the closure of one site following its purchase, with the extensive collective consultation and job losses arising from that.
- Advising on managing under-performance at senior management level, as well as resourcing major internal investigations and grievance procedures for clients.
Max became a part-time employment judge in 1993 and continues to serve in that capacity.
He regularly presents seminars and provides in house training on employment law to a variety of organisations.
