Regional Senior Partner
I decided early on that I wanted to be a lawyer. I attended Leicester University but I'm originally from Eastbourne. I started to think about applying for training contracts in my third year and used the Legal 500 publication to identify the type of firm I wanted to go to. I applied for three firms, one of which being Blake Lapthorn. I knew that I wanted to be a solicitor but didn't know which area I was most interested in and so was attracted to Blake Lapthorn due to the variety of disciplines they had to offer and the number of trainees who had stayed on and been promoted to Partner.
Back when I completed my LSF (equivalent to LPC) you received your results after starting your training contract so when the results were released Blake Lapthorn threw us a small party to celebrate, which is something we still do when our trainees qualify. The induction was really good and definitely succeeded in making me feel like part of the firm and during the Law South PSC course I was able to form strong relationships with fellow trainees.
During my training contract I worked in various areas of the firm including probate, conveyancing and commercial litigation. I learnt from incredibly bright people in a supportive and challenging atmosphere. We were always encouraged to partake in team and firm activities and were provided the opportunities to build networks with trainees in other local firms through our partnership with Law South.
I qualified in our London office in 1994 but moved to the South Coast in 1995 to work in our Clinical Negligence team. I must admit that I had a slight blip in my career when I moved firms but decided just a couple of months later that it wasn't for me and so returned to Blake Morgan.
When I returned I felt as though I needed to reinvent myself and was looking to move in to a Partner role which meant highlighting my value to the firm. In order to do that I was tasked with growing our small debt recovery team that consisted of just a handful of staff.
I landed our first large corporate client in 2002 and now represent some of the biggest brands in the financial sector and beyond. We've been ranked top tier in the Legal 500 every year since 2010 and the team is now made up of 35 dedicated and talented individuals.
I became a Partner in 2003 and was appointed as Regional Senior Partner for the South Coast in 2015; a role which I am honoured to have. As the RSP it's my role to ensure that the area feels connected, well informed about the business and to drive our business development agenda. It's ever-changing but great fun to work with so many people within my region.
My advice to upcoming trainees would be to choose the firms you apply to carefully and make sure they match your work and client desires. It's also important to note that although good academics are important; individuality is essential when trying to stand out from the crowd.
My fun fact is that I am a Trustee of the RSPCA Solent Branch. Throughout our lifetime, my wife and I have had over 20 cats (6 currently, 9 at our peak) but I actually found out just three months ago that I'm allergic to cats!
