Education and Adoption Bill
The Bill, announced in the Queen's Speech, has been published by the Education Secretary and is currently being debated in the House of Commons.
The Bill focuses on coasting schools (schools that are eligible for government intervention) and the government's plans to force the conversion of such schools into academies. The Bill introduces a duty for the governing body of the school and the local authority to 'take all reasonable steps to facilitate the conversion'.
The Bill also looks to reduce legal challenges by removing the 'bureaucracy' that holds up academy conversions. It aims to enable intervention in failing schools to take place more quickly by removing the requirement for the governing body to consult on the proposed conversion if the school is eligible for intervention or an Academy order has already been made, thus removing the likelihood of objections delaying the conversion.
Blake Morgan offers a leading Education team with significant experience in dealing with academy conversions, as well as a fixed-fee annual service for academies post-conversion, to assist with any legal issues which may arise.
