Options for academisation: Multi Academy Trusts and the changing school landscape

Posted on
Individual schools are being urged to carefully consider their options for academisation and in particular, when joining a Multi Academy Trust (MAT), with experts warning that the full legal implications of these choices may not be fully understood.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced measures in his Spring Budget for all maintained schools in England to convert to academy status by 2020 or be committed to converting by 2022. Many are expected to form part of a MAT.

In the article, Elizabeth argues that governing bodies of maintained schools must be careful to understand the outcome for the school of joining a MAT, due to the corporate structure by which they operate. She recommends that schools approaching academisation should seek legal advice to ensure they fully understand the company structure of a MAT and the school's position within it.
