Workplace accident ends engineering career

Injuring yourself at work can be a devastating blow to your personal and work life.

Fred* had already suffered a serious knee injury but matters were made worse when he had a workplace accident.

The incident ended his career as an engineer but thanks to surgery and a successful claim, he has been able to still enjoy time with his family, which is precious to him.

Blake Morgan were recommended to Fred and personal injury lawyer, James (Jim) Wood took up the claim on his behalf.

“Jim was successful, what a brilliant bloke,” commented Fred. “I am really glad he was recommended to me.

“I couldn’t get other work, I wasn’t looking for anything too heavy, too strenuous but I couldn’t get anything.”

He added: “We’ve got grand kids, you’ve got to keep going as best you can. I love every moment I can spend with them.”

On 9 May 2013, Fred was involved in an accident at work.  Whilst making his way through to an oil tank he caught his right foot on an air hose, which had been left on the floor. He tripped, lost his balance and fell to the floor sustaining an injury to his right knee.

He had already had surgery on his knee after a motorbike accident but had recovered well from that. However, he was in more pain following the workplace accident and with no improvement, Fred was listed for a two-stage revision total knee replacement and underwent the first stage on 18 August 2015 with the second stage revision performed on 10 May 2016.

The treatment meant Fred was unable to return to work and his employment was terminated on 31 March 2017.

The claim compromised with Fred accepting £165,000 from the workplace accident. It has enabled him to have an automatic car so that he can still get around and they have also refurbished their bathroom with a walk-in shower for safety reasons.

“I did think what would have happened if I hadn’t have got any compensation,” said Fred. “I was so grateful to Jim, what a smashing guy.

“I felt at ease with him. He was very methodical and leaves no stone unturned, he got the best people involved with the case.”
