  • Publishing: Company secretary of an academic publishing company and the Copyright Counsel for a number of publishing businesses.

Additional Expertise

Data protection: Advising on data protection issues since 1995 and has trained many companies on implementation of the legislation. He has been the data protection officer for a major national charity. He advises public sector and commercial bodies on Freedom of Information.

Climate Change: Advises international and national charities, and has served as legal adviser to a wide range of environmental and development charities and NGOs, including several household name charities.

He works with networks of environmental lawyers from around the world on climate change, in particular in relation to international negotiations of UNFCCC and public law issues.

In the UK he helps with a number of community groups with environmental or sustainable objectives in establishing the optimum legal structure and governance.

Author: Author of the NCVO’s guide to Contracts with Public Bodies.

Lecturer: Chairs conferences and is a lecturer on publishing and the law at the Publishing Postgraduate Course, Oxford Brookes University and the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers. Joss has also co-led the Rights Management module at the Publishing Centre at Oxford Brookes University for their MA in publishing course and is a presenter at the STM Masterclass.
