The Culture of Dying Matters

6th May 2025

It is Dying Matters Awareness Week on 5-11th May 2025. It is an important campaign led by Hospice UK and the theme this year is The Culture of Dying Matters. Every year people use Dying Matters Awareness Week to encourage people to start talking about death and dying in whatever way works for them.

The mission of Dying Matters is to break down the stigma and taboo of talking about death and dying.

We don’t all have the same views on this important topic and we may approach grief in different ways. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon in the UK for people to avoid conversations about death, and then after the event loved ones are left facing difficult questions, such as:

  • Shall we arrange a cremation or burial?
  • What kind of funeral shall we plan?
  • How do we divide personal belongings between us?
  • What happens to the pets?
  • Is there a Will, and if so, where is it?
  • What does the Will say and what does it mean?
  • What does it mean to be an Executor and Trustee?
  • Where is all the paperwork?
  • What assets and liabilities are there and how do I find this out?
  • Can the Will be contested?
  • Will I need to pay inheritance tax?
  • Recent legislative changes have led to families waiting weeks , or sometimes longer, to register a death and lay their loved ones to rest. How will this impact our preparations?

Being unprepared for death can cause unnecessary emotional and financial strain on those already struggling with loss.

It does not matter who we are, where we live, our culture or our faith, we will all experience death. It is inevitable, so we may as well address it. If you are wondering where to begin, simply start with a conversation. Talk to your loved ones about your wishes, consider how they will manage and what you can do to simplify things for them as best you can.

Talking about death can  be liberating, lift a weight off your shoulders and bring a sense of peace. Figuring out what really matters to you when you face the end of your life can help you and your loved ones prepare emotionally, practically and financially.
