Is it necessary, and what are the legal and practical implications for employers?
The coronavirus pandemic saw a significant increase in homeworking and hybrid working. However, there is an increasing move towards more structured office attendance by many organisations, including Boots, Amazon, Google and Lloyds of London. In pursuit of that objective, some employers are tracking attendance using swipe cards or making promotions dependent on increased office working.
Better collaboration, improved employee engagement, mentoring of junior colleagues and maintaining performance are some of the reasons cited by employers requiring a return to the office. Many employees on the other hand, want to retain the flexibility of working from home. There have been a number of high-profile organisations where employees have recently commenced, or voted for, industrial action because of the proposal to reduce the amount of remote working.
In the webinar, Employment experts Rajiv Joshi, Bob Cordran and Debra Gers:
- Discussed the legal issues arising out the requirement for more office-based working.
- Considered the practical implications for employers who want a return to the office.
- Considered what to do if employees want to work from home full-time.
- Discussed the sensitive balance between return-to-office initiatives and the need to recruit and retain talented employees.
- Considered whether the requirement for more office working disproportionately impacts certain groups.
