Safeguarding in education
On Wednesday 8 May at 10am, Blake Morgan’s safeguarding specialists Trish D’Souza (Legal Director in the Education team), Laura Sherratt (Associate) and Rachel Sales (Senior Associate) will be delivering a free session to provide you with the most up-to-date information on your legal duties, and will explore areas such as:
- Reminders on:
- Key governance issues including the general duty of care and trustees’ specific safeguarding duties;
- The duty to report safeguarding incidents or misconduct;
- Management of risk within local governing bodies, trading subsidiaries and other sources of delegated authority; and
- Safeguarding duties when working with charitable and non-charitable partners.
- Updated advice on sexual abuse and sexual harassment;
- Reinforcing human rights and duties under the Equality Act 2010;
- Online searches – and how far you can go;
- When low-level concerns should be reported to the LADO;
- Prospective mandatory duty to report child abuse; and
- Guidance for dealing with transgender pupils.

Trish D'Souza
Legal Director
Trish specialises in statutory interpretation, equality and discrimination, safeguarding, exclusion and disciplinary matters, human rights, student or parent complaints, special educational and additional learning needs, judicial review challenges and subcontracting disputes.
Laura Sherratt
Associate
Laura advises clients on a range of commercial, governance and regulatory issues including academy conversions and transfers, grants, sponsorship and collaboration agreements, and working with the Charity Commission, the DfE and other regulators in the sector.
Rachel Sales
Senior Associate
Rachel has a specialism in the property specific issues arising when schools covert to academy status as well as dealing with property issues arising post-conversion, including experience of submitting consent applications to the Education Funding Authority.
