How should I choose a mediator?
Mediation can be an excellent forum for discussing matters following a relationship breakdown. It can be difficult to know where to start, so how do you choose a mediator?
Mediators can be found all over England and Wales, and those registered with the Family Mediation Council will all have completed a level of required training, as have those registered with Resolution.
These can therefore be excellent places to start. It may then be sensible to consider whether meeting in person or online is preferable, as this may geographically restrict any search.
Many users of family mediation like the reassurance that the mediator has a background of practicing within family law, giving them the advantage of understanding the legal sphere in which their clients may be making decisions.
The mediators’ individual profiles may give further steers on areas of particular interest or specialism which may be relevant.
Mediation is entirely voluntary and so it is important that families wishing to attend mediation are confident that their mediator is the right fit. Some mediators may be able to speak informally on the telephone before formally arranging meetings. Others may have detailed information on their websites which may be helpful.
