The Notes are aimed at assisting on the implementation of the historic environment policy in the NPPF and Planning Policy Guidance. PPS5 Planning for the Historic Environment will in due course be cancelled.

Note 1 is a good practice guide to assist local authorities in the steps they should be taking to ensure their local plans are based on up to date evidence about the historic environment.  There is a handy list of types of contributions that may reasonably be secured by S106 agreements.

Note 2 relates to decision-taking in respect of the historic environment and;

Note 3 looks at the setting of heritage assets with helpful guidance on the tricky subject of the "extent" of setting and views.

Although they contain nothing particularly revolutionary the Notes nonetheless usefully expand upon the limited guidance set out in PPG.
