Business rates relief: Charity Commission investigates Life Foundation Trust regarding business rates relief

The Charity Commission recently reissued an alert to charities regarding risks associated with taking on tenancies to take advantage of business rates relief, and has recently announced that it is investigating the Life Foundation Trust. This brings the total number of charities currently under investigation in relation to this issue to five.

The investigation includes consideration as to whether the trustees acted in the best interests of the charity and satisfactorily discharged their legal duties in making the decision for the charity to enter into arrangements with third party landlords to occupy vacant properties.
