Singing lawyers at Portsmouth Cathedral

A team of singing lawyers brought festive cheer to clients and their families with a Christmas carol concert at Portsmouth Cathedral.

The choir from law firm Blake Morgan performed a concert of their favourite Christmas pieces and traditional carols before singing Greg Lake's ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ and finishing with a rousing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ for their guests.

The award-winning choir, called Habeas Chorus, was made up of 24 professionals from trainees to partners. The accompaniment was provided by probate lawyer and organist Jacquie Harry.

Choir member Mary Chant, a corporate and commercial partner at Blake Morgan which has offices in Portsmouth, said: “We wanted to put on a good performance to wish everyone a happy Christmas and always enjoy singing in the beautiful surroundings of Portsmouth Cathedral.

“The choir is all about enthusiasm and a love of music, and includes singers like me, who just used to sing in the shower, to keen amateurs who perform in musical theatre productions. We don’t hold auditions to join but just want members to be keen. They already know whether they can sing.”

Christmas Carol Concert guests were served mulled wine and mince pies to get them in the festive mood.

Earlier this year the choir scooped a prize at Southampton’s popular Festival of Music and Drama, with a medley of Gershwin which won their class with distinction.
