Family mediation signposting

Posted by Sarah French on

Family mediation is one of the ways separating or divorcing couples can resolve matters relating to their finances and/or children.  As a family mediator, I cannot provide a couple with legal advice, I can, however, provide useful details and information and help couples get the support they might need.  This can be particularly useful if the family is suffering from debt problems.  Given that the average credit card debt per household in the UK as at August 2015 was £6,518 this is not an uncommon problem.

There is a lot of help out there, much of which is free.  The Money Advice Service has a very helpful website. This offers free debt advice, providing help with budgeting and details about benefits.  The Step Change Debt Charity also has a helpful website. This again offers debt plan advice.  Your local Citizen's Advice Bureau may be able to help but it may take a while to get an appointment so the online resources are a useful immediate resource.

If you are based on the South Coast, there are several local charities and information sources that I have recommended to clients in the past, they have all proved to be very helpful:

Being in debt is not just a financial problem but one which can affect so many areas, so receiving some early help and signposting from a mediator may prove critical.
