Blake Lapthorn is to support the prestigious FT Weekend Oxford Literary Festival for the fourth year running.

The firm is delighted to once again be a partner and official lawyers of the festival, which takes place between Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 30. Blake Lapthorn, which has offices in Oxford as well as those in Southampton, London and Portsmouth, has been a proud supporter of the event since 2011.

The event hosts over 500 speakers and 300 events, and among those participating this year are Man Booker 2013 winner Eleanor Catton; former Booker prize winners Ian McEwan, Ben Okri and John Banville; Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk, and authors Michael Morpurgo and Madhur Jaffrey.

Blake Lapthorn partner Simon Stokes – himself a published author – will be among the speakers and will host a workshop on how eBooks and self-publishing have transformed the literary landscape. Simon, who specialises in publishing law and has been advising authors and publishers for more than 20 years, is the author of several books including Digital Copyright Law and Practice (4th edition 2014) and is a trustee of charitable publisher SPCK, one of the UK’s oldest publishers. He will host a workshop titled “Authors, self-publishing and eBooks: Promises and Pitfalls” on Wednesday, March 26 at 10am. The session will explore the legal issues facing authors who want to publish eBooks, from the creation of their work onwards, with practical advice on what to look out for on publishing contracts, how to avoid expensive libel law suits, what steps to take to preserve copyrights and how to ensure authors get the royalties they are entitled to. The focus will be on digital publishing, either through self-publishing or with an existing publisher.

Simon Stokes said: “Blake Lapthorn are established supporters of the Oxford Literary Festival and we’re very proud to be official lawyers of the festival. It is an event of which Oxford is justifiably proud, and I am very much looking forward to taking part.”
