Recent news from the JCPC: January 2017

Posted by Nicola Diggle on
In November 2016, the JCPC in London heard its first ever video-link case. The case ‘Cono Cono and Co Ltd (Appellant) v Veerasamy and others (Respondents)’ involved a procedural planning matter and the Board comprised of Lord Mance, Lord Clarke and Lord Sumption.

Whilst the judges sat in London, the counsel presented their arguments live from Mauritius.

Visits to JCPC jurisdictions

The JCPC will be sitting in Nassau, Bahamas, in February 2017 with a five judge panel.

The Board of the JCPC has indicated that is happy to consider invitations to sit remotely where there is sufficient workload and the host government will cover in-country costs and travel expenses.

If this would be of interest in your jurisdiction, please contact a member of the Blake Morgan Privy Council team.

Judicial Appointments

In November 2016 Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court, announced that he would be retiring in 2017, along with Lord Clarke. A Selection Commission is being convened to identify replacements for both of them and for Lord Toulson, who retired in September 2016.
